One Man Scramble,  June 14th,  11:00 Shotgun

We have been experimenting with various formats in an attempt to bring variety and more interesting competition to our quarterly Shotgun event.  On June 14th we will try out a Modified One-Man Scramble.

Depending on turnout, there will be up to 5 flights based on handicap with approximately 20 in each flight.  This is an individual championship and golfers will only compete against players in their own flight. Payouts will be for the 5 lowest gross scores in each flight.

“Modified” Scramble Rules — Each player will be allowed to hit two “mulligans” on each hole (only one mulligan per shot). Players cannot use two mulligans on one shot. Mulligans can be used on any shot from the tee through the green, including putts.   Players may not use a club-length to extricate themselves from a hazard, bunker or the rough. Players may not use the club-length to move onto the putting surface. On the green, the mulligan will be 6 inches.

Maximum Score — The maximum score on a hole is bogey. Once a player has missed both attempts at par, they are finished with that hole and will receive a score of one-over par for that hole.

Pace of Play — To speed up the pace of play for this type of tournament, it is recommended that you:

1.     Play ready golf

2.     Pick up when you get a bogey

3.     Take your mulligan immediately

If your foursome falls more than a hole behind and are requested to skip a hole to catch up, each player will take a bogey for the skipped hole.

SCGA Qualifier

In addition to this being a local tournament, this will also function as a Qualifier for the SCGA One Man Scramble. Half of the players from each flight electing to use this tournament as a qualifier, by paying a Local qualifying entry fee of $20, will advance on to the Sectional Championships.  In the case of a tie, the qualifying player will be determined by card off starting with the 18th hole and working back.  The Sectional will be held in August. The Southern California Championships will be held in October.  Proceeds from the $20 One Man Scramble fee benefit the SCGA Foundation and PGA Southern California Section Foundation.

The One Man Scramble is an exciting new format that gives golfers a chance to correct their mistakes during tournament competition. During each round of golf every golfer has faced one or more shots that they wished they could hit over again, or in golf vernacular “take a mulligan.” The One Man Scramble allows golfers to hit a mulligan on every shot if they wish. This format will generate extremely low scores and the pressure will be on each competitor to “go low” just to have a chance to be a winner.
