2007 Weekly Tournament Schedule
Set
The weekly tournament schedule for the Wednesday and
Saturday tournaments has been established and can be
found in the Calendars section on the web site
www.slrdmc.org.
There are over 100 tournaments scheduled. They
include:
Flighted Low Net
Flighted Low Net/Low Gross
Better Ball Partners
2 BB of Foursome
3 BB of Foursome
1-2-3
Match Play vs Par
Modified Stableford
All of the above tournaments are postable
rounds. Tournament formats such as 2-man scramble,
alternate shot, or Pinehurst are not included in our
weekly tournaments. Those formats are normally
reserved for the Member/Member and fun formats such
as Hot August Nites.
One thing you may notice- there are no Wednesday
Scrambles. In years past, we had a Shotgun Scramble
tournament every quarter. This year they have been
dropped due to lack of attendance. A normal
Wednesday will have between 100 and 110 players. At
the Scrambles the number of players was between 65
and 70 players. We considered the scramble to be a
“mixer” tournament, one where you were provided the
opportunity to play with members of the club that
you wouldn’t normally meet. We would welcome any
ideas as to how we can provide that “mixer”
capability in the future.
For our new members (we get around 150 new members
every year), we would encourage you to come out and
play in these tournaments. You don’t have to be part
of a foursome. There is always an opening in a
group. Just show up and the Pro Shop will sign you
up.
Our annual St. Patrick’s Tournament has been
scheduled for Mar 14. This year the format will be
slightly different- Irish Four Ball. Teams of four
golfers, each playing his own ball throughout- use a
Modified Stableford system. Details about the format
can be found on the Men’s Club web site in the
calendar section. The highlight of the tournament,
other than seeing yours truly in knickers, is the
great Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner that is
included. Hope to see you all there.
Again, for our new members, we have two special
tournaments every year. They are the Presidents Cup
and the Club Championship. The Presidents Cup
determines the Match Play Champions for the
year. The format consists of two rounds of
qualifying in June, followed by single elimination
matches thorough July and August. There are 16
qualifiers (4 in each flight) on Wednesday and 16
qualifiers on Saturday. Elimination matches
determine the Wednesday and the Saturday Champions,
and they play each other for the Presidents Cup. The
Club Championship is held in September. There are 10
Club Champions determined through a series of
36-hole tournaments. They are: Gross Champion,
Senior Gross Champion, Wednesday Net Champions (4
flights), and
Saturday Net Champions (4 flights). Results of the
2006 Championship can be found in the September 2006
Calendar.
We appreciate any feedback and/or ideas you may have
about our tournament schedule. We look forward to
seeing you on the links this year.

Hey Swing
Doc
Exercises for golf
When it comes to the question of
training for golf, we need to understand that golf uses
nearly all the muscles in the body; so almost any sort
of exercise will be of value with the prime goal of
overall conditioning. Most amatuer golfers need to pay
particular attention to both the hands and forearms.
Why?
1. The hands are the most important
link between the main source of power and the clubhead
2. The greater that main source of
power, the stronger the hands need to be to cope with
the faster moving larger muscles
3. To maintain a firm enough control of
the club strong hands need to grip relatively less
tightly than weaker hands
4. Golfers with stronger "educated"
hands can often play reasonably & golf with a less than
perfect swing
HOWEVER
5. The hands and arms can never be the
main source of power
So, there is tons to be said for strong
arms/hands and the effect on the course will be seen
more likely in greater accuracy and consistency rather
than greater length.

Golf Isn't Tough? Sez Who?
A "panel of experts" over at
espn.com, that's who. ESPN.com's Page 2 section
ranked the toughest sports, one through 60, and
golf doesn't fare too well.
In fact, golf comes in all the
way down at No. 51, just ahead of cheerleading.
But hey, at least we also beat out curling!
The panel rated each sport in
various categories such as strength, endurance
and so on, and concluded that boxing is the
toughest, most-demanding sport of all. Golf
fared particularly poorly in the categories of
speed and agility. I supposed these so-called
"experts" have never seen John Daly grabbing for
another six-pack.
I believe Page 2 has vastly
underrated the toughness of golf as a sport, and
of golfers themselves. How tough are golfers?
Consider these facts:
Walking 36 holes in a day?
One word: chafing.
We get a lot of calluses on
our hands.
Using clubhouse showers
always carries the risk of athlete's foot.
Those rotisserie weiners
rotating at the snack bar have been there
since 1986.
New golf shoes can take a few
rounds to break in.
Sure, a caddie will carry
your golf bag for you, but some of them have
real attitude problems.
Sometimes, in complete
disregard of accepted
etiquette,
a golfer will play out of turn. This can be
very hurtful to the feelings of his playing
partners.
The condition of on-course
restrooms at municipal golf courses can make
a hockey goon scream like a little girl.
Not all sunscreens are
hypoallergenic.
Golf tees? You could put an
eye out with those things.
Yeah, let's see a boxer perform
his sport in lime-green polyester pants with a
2-inch-wide white belt, and then talk about
which sport is toughest.
