What is the purpose of the golf swing? 

Many golfers think the answer is to hit the golf ball!  This is true to a great extent, however, Ifeel the purpose of the golf swing is to create a controlled collision between the clubface and the golf ball resulting in a desirable ball flight.  That's it!  Yes, I wrote collision, and the collision is the result of a correctly controlled motion.  In order to gain a better understanding of controlled collision practice your putting technique while varying the clubface position at impact. 

As a drill, take three balls to the putting green.  Hit the first ball with a square clubface, the second ball with a open clubface and the third ball with a closed face.  Notice the difference in feel, roll, and the direction of the putt. 

Continue to practice this drill until you feel you can control your stroke, with the goal of square contact.  Keep working on this controlled collision for putting and you will gain a great feel lfor square contact in all other areas of the game.

Here is an interesting Rules of Golf question:  
   

Say you have a 3-foot putt downhill -- you attempt and the ball rolls past the hole and off the green -- can you replace the ball to its original spot with a one-stroke penalty?
 

What is the Correct Answer?

A.     Are you nuts? A putt is a putt, and you play it as it lies, or

B.     Pick it up. Why be stuck with an impossible lie? You already have a read; play it again with a one-stroke penalty.
