News from our Mens Club President...Fred Bradley

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Congratulations, we have just over five hundred members. Sign up your friends and relatives and earn a free round of golf ($38 value – can also be applied to weekend rounds).

We listen to the Members, and we have tried to design our club activities around your requests and needs. For instance, because of the low response to our member guest tournament last year, we will discontinue this event this year and will replace it with a member–member tournament. I am personally saddened by this because it has always been a fantastic event. I would like to hear your feedback?   Ray Gray and Vic Scimo are working on a questionnaire to get your response to our member – guest and other events. The questionnaire will be out soon!

TEAM PLAY - History has repeated itself with s.c.g.a. team play. Captain of the year Scruff Phillips again got his Thursday team into the playoffs. The Saturday team has had another year of rebuilding. However, Saturday Team did have a successful match against the winner of the division Eagle Glen, and I have included the score sheet just to show that our guys really can play. Hector Leon and Terry Lau (Thursday); Blade Austell and Kraig Akers (Saturday) were voted Team Players of year by their peers.
It looks like the senior team is in another rebuilding year with Roger Necochea receiving rookie of the year honors. You can find the status of senior team play by going to their web site @sdcsgolfleague.com.

The Saint Patrick’s Day event march, 14th was a success and everyone had a great time. The Irish four ball-or something format (blame Roger McKee for this one) was very stimulating for those of us with a.d.d .or beginning Dementia. Mike Santo provided a great corned beef and cabbage dinner and there were plenty of raffle prizes.
If you have any suggestions to improve the club contact a board member or e-mail Fred Bradley (Cynthia@ixpres.com) or Roger McKee (roger@tfb.com).

The restaurant and snack bar gives a 10% discount on food to members of the men’s club. Just ask for the men’s club discount and you will receive the discount.

CONGRATULATIONS to our golf professional Greg Milligan for scoring a very rare double eagle two on the par 5 15TH hole at Fallbrook during the first Village Cup team match-he knocked a three iron into the hole.
ALSO, Greg, Don O’Connor (mens club champion) and Jamie Hoffmann (ladies club champion) qualified for the 2007 Lexus southern cal TV. Team championship to be aired in may.   Since they won their first match, they are no longer known as “the choking dogs”.   Of eighty eight teams that tried to qualify, they are down to the final 8, and they could go all the way. Watch for them on the Fox channel in May. They are now called “The Dream Team from the Downs”

We have a great year planned; all you have to do is PARTICIPATE!

News from our Head Pro...Greg Milligan

Men’s club Champion Don O’Connor, Ladies Club Champion Jamie Hoffman and Myself Greg Milligan competed in the 2007 Lexus Southern California Team Matches. There were 80 golf courses qualifying for 16 spots in the made for TV matches. We qualified 7th and moved on to the match play. Our first match was against Industry Hills golf course who made it to the semifinals the year before. Don, Jamie and I all played great and we won the match. Our next match the quarterfinal match was against Glendora CC, which were the defending champs. The match went back and forth with both teams matching birdie for birdie. Going into the last hole the match was tied. The match was held at Lake San Marcos CC and the last hole is a par 5. After 3 shots Jamie and I were about 18 feet for birdie and Don was about 12 feet for birdie. Glendora’s pro was about 40 feet for! birdie with his 2 partners about 8 feet for birdie. The Glendora pro drills his putt for birdie from 40 feet. Jamie putts first and just misses her put to the right, I putt next and hit my putt perfect accept for the fact it stops one inch dead center from going in (I have to make the putt and I leave it short!). Don who played great all day hits his putt just right of the hole so we lose the match on the last hole. The matches will be on Fox Sports Net starting in June. Look for us, we represented the Downs well.

Planning for 2007 Summer League
Preliminary discussions are under way relative to establishing a 12-week summer league.
Last years’ inaugural summer league was successful even though it got off to a late start.
This year we are considering running the league in June, July, and August.
Play will be every Thursday with shotgun start at 5:00 pm, with dinner following play.
Last years’ format was BB Partners Match Play. This year we will do BB Partners, but will make it medal play with points awarded to the teams based on their placing each week. The team with the most points will win the league. We are considering payouts for the first 6 places. There will also be payouts each week for the first 3 places.
To add a little variety we are looking at making some of the matches a different format (see below).

A maximum of 12 teams will be established. Teams will consist of up to 4 members, with 2 of the members playing each week. Substitutes will be permitted. Handicaps will be the current Men’s club handicap, adjusted each month. All events will be net scoring.

The Board of Directors will complete the policies and procedures during the month of April. The final Formats and Rules will be announced in next month’s Newsletter.

Contact the Pro Shop if you are interested in forming a team or want to be considered for a team.

Hey Swing Doc...

What is the swing plane?

Simply stated, the swing plane is defined as the relationship between where the clubshaft is pointing and the target line.  The plane of the golf swing is the angle of the clubshaft relative to your body and your target line.  A golf swing is on-plane if the shaft of the club points at (or close to) the target line throughout the entire swing.  During the golf swing, whichever end of the club is closest to the target line should be pointing to the target line.

Keep things simple and swing on plane while executing all shots, including putting and chipping.

Why Are Masters Champions Presented with a Green Jacket?

Each year, the winner of The Masters is presented with the famous "Green Jacket." Slipping on the green jacket is the golden moment for many winners of the tournament. But how did a green jacket come to be such a big deal? What is the story behind the vaunted Green Jacket?

Let's face it: if you saw someone walking around in public in a shamrock green jacket, you'd probably think that person was severely fashion-challenged. Shamrock green jackets are, well, ugly.
But the Green Jacket presented to the Masters champion is one beautiful piece of outerwear. The tradition of the Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club dates to 1937. That year, members of the club wore green jackets during the tournament so that fans in attendance could easily spot them if they needed to ask questions.
According to the official website of The Masters:
"Jackets were purchased from the Brooks Uniform Company, New York City ... Members were not initially enthusiastic about wearing the warm, green coat. Within several years, a lightweight, made-to-order Jacket was available from the Club's Golf Shop.
The single breasted, single vent Jacket's color is 'Masters Green' and is adorned with an Augusta National Golf Club logo on the left chest pocket. The logo also appears on the brass buttons."
Soon, the Green Jacket became the symbol of membership in the ultra-exclusive Augusta National Golf Club. And slipping a jacket onto the winner of The Masters - a tradition that began in 1949 - symbolized that golfer's entry into the exclusive club of Masters champions.

  7. Summer league play will start soon.  Play format shall be in compliance with SCGA. Winner qualifies for the SCGA tournament. Play will be on Thursday afternoons at 5 PM.
  8. It was suggested that a schedule of upcoming Men’s Club tournaments be posted at front desk covering next three – four weeks. Leah can print from calendar and place at desk for viewing. This will help players to make arrangements for participation.
  9. It was discussed about possible changes to the low gross/low net formats. After considerable discussion it was determined not to take any action at this time.
  10. R.G. introduced the upcoming Village Cup Matches. Play will involve Fallbrook Men’s club, Pala Mesa Men’s Club, California Men’s club and SLRD Men’s club. Play will start in March and conclude in June. The sponsor of the tournament is the Fallbrook Winery. The board vote for selection of team members to start from directors then fill open spots from general membership.
